As part of the Nothing Community Project, creating a CMF direction for Nothing Phone (2a) began with an understanding that CMF is central to how Nothing communicates its values. Rather than using color and finish as surface-level expression, we treated them as a way to reveal structure and intent. Transparency, layering and subtle contrast were explored to make the internal logic of the device legible while maintaining visual restraint. The goal was to preserve the brand’s technical honesty while ensuring the phone still felt approachable and balanced in everyday use.
From a design perspective, the challenge was to create a CMF that felt expressive without becoming loud. Materials were chosen for their tactile quality and durability, with finishes that respond gently to light and wear over time. Color was used sparingly and with purpose, allowing the form and construction to remain the focus. The result was a CMF concept that felt cohesive, considered and aligned with Nothing’s community-driven ethos, reinforcing the Phone (2a) as a product that invites curiosity while fitting naturally into daily life.
Alongside the speakers, equal attention was given to the stands and accessories, treating them as integral parts of the system rather than afterthoughts. From an industrial design perspective, these elements needed to visually disappear while still feeling purposeful and well crafted. We carefully tuned proportions, junctions and cable management so each accessory feels calm and architectural in the space. The CMF strategy was deliberately aligned with the speakers, matching finishes, textures and tonal depth so everything reads as a single, cohesive family. The result is a system that blends effortlessly into the home, supporting the experience without ever competing for attention
